Barriers, Assistive Technologies & Alternative Access Strategies

Speech recognition

Speech recognition software takes verbal input from a user and turns it into commands the computer understands. These commands can control applications and mouse movement. Speech recognition software can also be used to dictate text into a given application. This technology is used mainly by physically disabled people who cannot use a mouse and/or keyboard. It can also be used by the learning disabled to help get their ideas into written form. Although the different software packages have improved over time, the main drawback still lies in the fact that a user must train the system to recognize his or her voice, a process which requires persistence.
