Barriers, Assistive Technologies & Alternative Access Strategies

Adapted keyboards

Adapted keyboards are keyboards that have been redesigned or reconfigured to suit a certain disability. There are many different types of adapted keyboards, as there are many different types of disabilities. There are "small form factor" or one-handed keyboards to help the physically disabled. There are large key or "tactile feedback" keyboards to aid the visually impaired. There are even keyboards that have an alphabetical layout (instead of the standard "qwerty") to help learning disabled users. Another adapted keyboard isn't even real, but instead is a virtual onscreen representation called an "onscreen keyboard." Onscreen keyboards allow text input with a mouse, a touch screen, or a single external button called a switch.
