Media Players

The majority of media players are available as both stand-alone desktop applications and as browser plug-ins. Some of the most popular media players are Apple’s QuickTime, RealNetwork’s RealPlayer and RealOne, and Microsoft’s Windows Media Player. These media players address accessibility in different ways, and there are even differences between stand-alone and plug-in versions made by the same company. They all have strengths and weaknesses, and it is impossible to recommend any single player. However, there are certain questions you can ask and guidelines to follow when making a decision:

  1. Can the media player support captioning and synchronous audio tracks?
  2. Can the user control the player or plug-in using only the keyboard or assistive technology tools?
  3. Is the desired behavior consistent across platforms and browsers?
