Accessible Web Design

Equivalent Alternatives for Text

Accessibility issues usually focus on ensuring text equivalents for non-text material such as images, sounds, video and animation, scripts, applets and more. However, many people have difficulty reading, due to a learning disability or other cognitive impairment. Supplementing text with graphical and auditory equivalents to facilitate comprehension is only a Priority 3 item in W3C, and is not even mentioned in Section 508. However, if you are concerned with maximum accessibility, do not limit your thoughts to only text equivalents for images and sounds. Meeting the needs of all users may mean including visual and auditory alternatives for text. In some cases it may mean adding illustrations, appropriately captioned or transcribed audio explanations, or described animations of complex concepts and processes.
